NEMA Flags Off Operation Eagle Eye 2025 At Giri Junction, FCT

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Abuja Operations Office, has flagged off Operation Eagle Eye 2025 at Giri Junction along the Abuja–Lokoja Federal Highway as part of efforts to enhance road safety, improve traffic management, and ensure rapid emergency response during the Yuletide season.

The operation was formally declared open on behalf of the Director-General of NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar, by the Director of Planning, Research, and Forecasting, Dr Onimode Bandele. The flag-off ceremony, hosted by the NEMA Abuja Operations Office in collaboration with NEMA Headquarters, brought together key emergency management stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, Dr Bandele conveyed the Director-General’s commitment to proactive disaster risk reduction and strengthened inter-agency collaboration. He described Operation Eagle Eye as a critical annual initiative aimed at safeguarding lives and property during periods of increased vehicular movement.

Earlier, the Head of the Abuja Operations Office, Mr Zakari Abubakar, highlighted the importance of the operation in complementing the statutory responsibilities of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). He noted that the Abuja–Lokoja corridor is one of the busiest highways during the festive period, requiring heightened vigilance, coordination, and operational readiness.

The programme also featured remarks from the Director of Search and Rescue at NEMA Headquarters, Air Commodore Usman Bature, as well as goodwill messages from participating stakeholders, including the Director-General of the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Engr Abdulrahman Mohammed. Other stakeholders present included the FRSC, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), and the Nigerian Red Cross Society, all of whom reaffirmed their commitment to seamless collaboration throughout the operation.

Highlights of the event included an inspection of response and extrication equipment to assess preparedness, followed by a joint patrol by participating agencies along critical sections of the highway, marking the commencement of field operations.

Operation Eagle Eye 2025 is designed to support traffic control, prevent road traffic crashes, and ensure prompt rescue and emergency response during the festive season. Road users were advised to obey traffic regulations, avoid speeding and reckless driving, and cooperate with officials on duty to ensure a safe and hitch-free Yuletide period.
