IGP Egbetokun Charges Newly Promoted Senior Officers On Ethical, Results-Driven Leadership

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has described promotion within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) as a deliberate, merit-based process that reflects institutional confidence in officers’ leadership capacity, judgement, and readiness for higher responsibility.

Speaking at the decoration ceremony of newly promoted senior police officers, the IGP said the elevation of officers to senior ranks goes beyond the wearing of new insignia, noting that it signifies trust in their discipline, professionalism, and ability to lead effectively under pressure.

He congratulated the newly promoted Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, and Commissioners of Police, stating that their advancement followed years of consistent service, operational exposure, and postings across diverse commands and security environments.

The IGP emphasised that senior rank must translate into leadership effectiveness, stressing the need for clarity of thought, decisiveness, emotional restraint, and strategic awareness in command responsibilities. He noted that promotion also represents a renewed call to service, with heightened administrative, operational, and ethical accountability.

Reiterating that ethical leadership is non-negotiable, the IGP warned that misconduct tolerated at senior levels undermines discipline and erodes public trust. He charged the officers to uphold integrity, accountability, and respect for human dignity, while enforcing professional standards firmly and fairly.

The ceremony, according to the IGP, reaffirmed the NPF’s commitment to transparent, merit-based promotion processes that motivate performance, strengthen command structures, and enhance morale. He assured that the Force would continue to protect the integrity of its promotion system as a core institutional value.

He further noted that with increased rank comes greater public visibility and scrutiny, requiring senior officers to demonstrate competence not only in operations but also in stakeholder engagement, inter-agency collaboration, and community relations. He added that addressing contemporary security threats demands strategic thinking, adaptability, and intelligence-led policing.

The IGP commended the Police Service Commission for its professionalism and transparency throughout the promotion process and acknowledged the sacrifices and support of the families of the newly promoted officers.

He urged the officers to justify their elevation through disciplined leadership, sound professional judgement, and measurable improvements in security outcomes, stressing that the confidence reposed in them must be repaid through actions that strengthen public trust and enhance the effectiveness and credibility of the Nigeria Police Force.

Guests at the ceremony included the Executive Governors of Delta and Jigawa States,  Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori and Mallam Umar A. Namadi, FCA; Honourable Member of the House of Representatives representing Bida, Gboko and Katcha Constituencies, Hon. SMA Gworozo Nupe; former Deputy Governor of Edo State and Director-General, National Institute for Sports,  Comrade Philip Shaibu; and the Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor. Members of the Force Management Team, serving and retired senior police officers, as well as families and well-wishers of the promoted officers, were also in attendance.
