Gombe State Governor and Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, has called on religious leaders across the country to consistently promote values that promote peace and harmony in society.
The governor made the call while delivering his remarks as a special guest at the opening ceremony of the 40th Annual National Qur’anic Recitation Competition and Anniversary, tagged Borno 2025.
The event, held at the University of Maiduguri Auditorium, was attended by dignitaries, including National Assembly members, traditional rulers, eminent Islamic scholars and members of the academic community.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya described the annual competition as an important platform for promoting Islamic knowledge, moral values, cultural identity, unity and brotherhood.
He stressed that Islamic scholars and followers must exemplify the true teachings of Islam by living peacefully and preaching peace at every opportunity.
He commended the organisers for their steadfastness and commitment to maintaining high standards over the years, noting that such efforts contribute immensely to shaping responsible, morally upright citizens.
While declaring the event open, Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, expressed deep appreciation for hosting the competition.
He described the event as significant to his state’s ongoing peacebuilding and reconstruction efforts after years of insecurity and destabilisation.
Governor Zulum assured participants of the state’s hospitality and adequate security throughout the competition.
“We are delighted that, after more than 30 years, Borno State is once again hosting this competition, which brings together outstanding Qur’anic reciters from across the country. We believe the event will further strengthen the tradition of promoting scholarship, unity, and spiritual renewal, which are values that remain central to national cohesion and peaceful coexistence.”
Zulum also announced a collective donation of N120 million on behalf of the Northeast Governors for a book launch held during the opening ceremony.
Other dignitaries who delivered goodwill messages included Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, represented by the Speaker of the Yobe State House of Assembly, alongside the Shehu of Borno and several other prominent leaders.
