The Labour Party has welcomed the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) recognition of its Interim National Leadership, led by Senator Nenadi E. Usman, describing the decision as a lawful affirmation of the party’s leadership.
In astatement signed by Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, and dated January 31, 2026, the party said INEC’s action complied with a recent judgment of the Federal High Court, which directed the electoral body to recognise Senator Usman’s leadership as the only legitimate leadership of the Labour Party, to the exclusion of all other claimants.
The party expressed appreciation to INEC’s leadership for what it described as adherence to the rule of law, justice, and constitutionalism, noting that the recognition would bring an end to months of internal disputes and uncertainty.
According to the statement, the development provides an opportunity for reconciliation and unity within the party, as members across the country were urged to rally behind the interim leadership to reposition the Labour Party ahead of forthcoming elections.
Reaffirming its role as a major opposition party, the Labour Party said it remains committed to offering Nigerians a credible, people-oriented political alternative, stressing that unity and collective sacrifice are essential to achieving this objective.
The party also thanked its supporters nationwide for their resilience and steadfastness, commended the judiciary for upholding justice, and acknowledged the Nigerian media for what it described as principled reporting.
As efforts intensify to rebuild and strengthen party structures nationwide, the Labour Party appealed for patience and continued public support, assuring Nigerians of its determination to restore the party to electoral competitiveness within the shortest possible time.
