The recent announcement by the Nigeria Police Force on the resumption of enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy deserves commendation, particularly for its timeliness and relevance to Nigeria’s current security realities.
At a time when criminal elements increasingly exploit gaps in enforcement to perpetrate crimes, the decision by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, to reactivate this important aspect of traffic and security regulation is both responsible and reassuring.
It is important to clearly state that the resumption of enforcement is pending the final determination of the matter currently before the court. Contrary to claims by some ill-informed commentators, there is no subsisting court order restraining the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing the provisions of the law regulating the use of tinted glass on vehicles.
The enforcement of tinted permit regulations in Nigeria is rooted in existing law, specifically the National Road Traffic Regulations, 2012, and the Motor Vehicle (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 2004.
In fact, in the spirit of responsibility, transparency, and public convenience, the Police had earlier suspended enforcement to allow motorists ample opportunity to regularise their documentation and complete the permit registration process without undue pressure.
Unfortunately, the period of suspension coincided with a disturbing rise in criminal activities across the country. Reports of kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent crimes increased, with many of these acts carried out using vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass.
Such vehicles provide cover for criminals, making identification difficult and undermining proactive policing efforts. It is therefore not surprising that the Nigeria Police, after a careful review of emerging security concerns and the overriding need to ensure the safety of all citizens, found it both necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement of the policy.
The renewed enforcement is a proactive measure aimed at safeguarding communities, deterring criminal mobility, and strengthening internal security. Far from being punitive, it is a preventive strategy rooted in law and public interest. Societies governed by the rule of law cannot afford selective obedience to regulations, especially those directly linked to security.
Worthy of commendation is the assurance given by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, that the enforcement will be carried out with the utmost professionalism, respect for citizens’ rights, and strict adherence to extant laws.
This assurance reflects the leadership philosophy of the current IGP, who has consistently emphasised that policing must be firm yet fair, lawful yet humane. Under his watch, the promotion of public safety and the upholding of the rule of law remain top priorities.
As citizens, we also have a role to play. Genuine vehicle owners who require tinted glass for medical, security, or other lawful reasons are advised to apply through the approved channels and ensure full compliance with legal procedures. Compliance not only protects motorists from avoidable inconvenience but also contributes to collective security.
In conclusion, the resumption of the Tinted Glass Permit enforcement is a timely and well-considered decision. It reflects responsive leadership, a commitment to public safety, and a resolve to deny criminals the tools they exploit.
The Nigeria Police Force, under IGP Egbetokun, deserves public support in this effort, as a safer society ultimately benefits us all.
