19 Northern Governors Back Creation Of State Police Due To Insecurity

The Northern Governors Forum appealed to the National Assembly on Saturday to enact a law establishing state police to enhance security nationwide.

Director-General (Press Affairs) to Gombe State Governor Ismaila Uba Misilli, in a press release, said that the call was contained in a communique at the end of the Forum’s meeting on Saturday.

The communique was read by the NGF Chairman, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.

After exhaustive deliberations on matters of regional interest, particularly security, the Forum released the following communique:

1. The Forum commends Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his sustained commitment to addressing the security challenges and infrastructural deficits in Northern Nigeria.

2. The Forum resolved to liaise with the Nigerian Governors Forum to work out modalities of how to increase support to the Federal Security Agencies.

Northern governors, led by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State (M), and traditional rulers, led by Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar (5th L), after a joint meeting in Kaduna.

3. The Forum also resolved to strengthen peculiar local initiatives in combating all forms of security challenges.

4. The Forum also resolved to urgently set up inter-state platforms to coordinate surveillance on our joint borders.

5. The Forum reiterated its support for the creation of state police and called on the National Assembly to expedite action on the enactment of the legal framework for its takeoff.

6. The forum’s next meeting will be held on the 30th of August, 2025.

The 19 Northern Governors and state chairmen of the traditional rulers attended the meeting.
