The Integrity Youth Alliance has passed a vote of confidence on the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, over the management of the August 1st protest and asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to disregard any call for the sack of the IGP.
Speaking to journalists in Osun State, the Secretary General of the group, Danjuma Lamido, urged IGP Egbetokun to remain focused on giving Nigerians the best police/community relationship so that those calling for his sack might not tarnish his hard reputation as a police chief of impeccable antecedents.
The statement reads, “Our attention has been drawn to news making the rounds of a group of unpatriotic and disgruntled NGOs, the Community Outreach for Development and Welfare Advocacy (CODWA), asking President Tinubu to sack the IGP.
“We are very much aware that since the protests failed woefully, some NGOs are trying to justify their paymasters by attacking the person of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Egbetokun.
“Because the protest failed woefully, the organisers decided to provoke the security agencies to have something to hold them responsible, but kudos to the security agencies, especially the Nigeria Police, for their professionalism in handling the provocations from the protesters peacefully.
“As Nigerian youth, we want to assure the Inspector General of Police that we are solidly behind him on all his actions during the failed protest, as things must be done properly.
“Therefore, the call for the sack of the IGP is not only malicious but selfish and self-centred. We call on President Tinubu to disregard the call as their actions undermine the effort of IGP Egbetokun to bring the Nigeria Police to global reckoning, the statement said.
Recall that the Community Outreach for Development and Welfare Advocacy (CODWA) on Sunday called for the sack of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) after the President’s address to the Nation over the August 1st Protest.
