In response to the rising crime rate in the Federal Capital Territory, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun launched a Special Intervention Squad on Wednesday.
IGP Egbetokun emphasised during the Abuja inauguration ceremony that the squad is made up of highly mobile, well-trained police officers who can effectively handle major security breaches and intervene quickly.
The IGP stated that the initiative was the result of careful planning, commitment to improving the FCT’s already strong security infrastructure, and foresight, stressing the necessity for swift and decisive action in response to the worrying increase in criminal activity.
He outlined the squad’s vision, which includes a thousand personnel in each state, drawn from various tactical units of the force. The squad will be equipped with a formidable arsenal of operational assets, including sophisticated arms, drones, and vehicles, ready for deployment to counteract security threats.
The IGP believes that this demonstrates the Police Force’s unwavering dedication to the protection and security of the populace.
The squad’s duties will include breaking up criminal networks in addition to community-oriented policing, which is in line with the Nigeria Police’s belief that public safety is a team effort.
IGP Egbetokun emphasized the importance of working closely with community leaders, residents, and stakeholders to strengthen the bonds between the Police Force and the communities. The overall objective is to ensure that every corner of the FCT remains a haven for its inhabitants.
The Police SIS operatives later embarked on a show of force and confidence-building operations to Kawu and other communities within the Bwari Area Council of FCT.
